The Beginning of Time, 1994

Based on the original silver dye-beach (Cibachrome) print, CVNRA, #412, 1987. From the series: Overlooked in America: The Success and Failure of Federal Land Management

Random stitch embroidery silk thread and watercolor on silk gauze. Standing Screen, Three panels, 59 7/16 x 63 13/16 inches (151 x 162 cm) overall.

A collaboration with Robert Glenn Ketchum and Suzhou Embroidery Research Institute (SERI) which began in 1985.

This is a transparent random stitch silk embroidery based on his original silver dye-beach print (Cibachrome) image.

Each panel required three years to create.

The success of this remarkable interpretation of a photograph in the style of Chinese painting rests on simplification. Much of the fabric is left untouched, but parts of it have been tinted with color to lend body and tone to the embroidery. The restraint and refinement of the piece result from the interplay between worked and unworked areas, a device often used in Chinese painting. The people involved in this project believe that this piece epitomizes the new Suzhou embroidery: modern and realistic but with a strong flavor of traditional art.

Embroidered by: Guan Peiying, Huang Chunya, SERI.
